Animals can obtain some of this chemical energy as food by eating plants, or by eating animals which eat other animals or plants. They absorb radiant energy from sunlight and transform it into useful chemical energy contained in molecules within their cells. Plants are able to harness and use light energy in a process called photosynthesis.

The name of this song may sound unfamiliar, but you've probably heard it-and you've probably been making up your own lyrics for it! Maybe you've thought, “Are these people begging for beer and moldy bread and talking about a weasel?” Honestly, the entire song does not make much sense unless you know about the fossilized word "wassailing"! □ Here we come a-wassailing, among the leaves so green □ĪKA: Here we come asking for some holiday drinks Fossils buried in "Here We Come A-Wassailing" (Now you can watch the yule log on YouTube!) "Tide" is a word that meant season, so by the 15th century "Yuletide" was used for the Christmas season and also the Pagan celebration of the Winter Solstice. During this time, a yule log would traditionally be burned. The word was related to the Old Norse jōl, which was the 12-day Pagan Feast to celebrate the Winter Solstice. "Yule" dates back to around the year 900 from the Old English word geōl, meaning Christmas. Also a weird one! "Yuletide" or "yule" is basically an old term for the Christmas season. Wow, this one is wacky! "Troll" dates back to the 16th century and originally meant to sing in a full, rolling voice-not, amazingly, to mess with somebody on the internet. Until the 20th century, "gay" was very frequently used to mean "happy" or "joyful," and in this carol it means especially flashy or finely dressed! □ Troll the ancient yuletide carol □ĪKA: Heartily □sing □ that really old Christmas (or Pagan Winter Solstice Feast) song! This verb is an old way of saying “to put on.” ( BONUS: the opposite of "don" is "doff" (to take off), which is also a fossil in the phrase to doff one's hat.) Nick himself! Because it has survived as a fossil in this song, we now see this in the names of brands and events. This word came from the Dutch decken, meaning “to cover” and eventually took on the meaning "to decorate." This can mean literally putting up wreaths or bows of pine, cedar, balsam, etc., but now you'll also hear it used for hanging stockings, putting candles in the window, hanging mistletoe, and prepping for St. Here are three fossilized phrases to listen for in this Christmas carol: □ Deck the halls with boughs of holly □ "Deck the Halls” was originally written in 1862 by Scottish musician Thomas Oliphant and set to the tune of an even older Welsh New Year's song. Centuries ago, it was applied to English songs with a refrain that repeated after each verse, and the word "carol" became associated with song instead of dance. Here's what's hidden away in your favorite carols! Why are they called Christmas "carols"?įirst, you may be wondering why we call them Christmas carols, and not Christmas songs □ Well, "carol" itself is actually a fossil word! Carole was a French word for a dance performed in a circle. Some non-seasonal fossil words are in the phrases “the whole shebang,” “to and fro,” and “let bygones be bygones.” But Christmas carols are especially full of fossils! In fact, many words in Christmas songs date back to Old English or Middle English, and even other languages like Dutch and Old Norse!Ĭhristmas is such an old holiday that many fossil words continue to live on-and you help them live on, whether you're singing along in a choir, at an ugly sweater party, or when holiday songs start playing on every radio station in November. Have you ever listened to a Christmas carol and thought, “Wait… what did they say?!" What does it mean to "deck" the halls, anyway? □ These seasonal songs are filled with some really unusual expressions and vocabulary, called fossil words: words that are now used in only specific contexts, especially in idioms. Stop adding water when the material has a thin coat of wet polish and the tumbling action is smooth and rapid. Turn on the tumbler and slowly add water. Add one tablespoon of grit for every two pounds of material in the bowl. If needed, add ceramic media that has been previously polished, to bring the bowl up to the manufacturer's recommended operating level. Place the cleaned material back in the bowl. Make sure that your barrel and rough have been cleaned thoroughly. Thoroughly clean the bowl and material before moving to the polishing step. Open the bowl every 8-12 hours to check the action is still good. Then, turn the tumbler on and slowly add water until the material has a thin coat of wet grit and the tumbling action is smooth and fast in the bowl. Add one tablespoon of polish for every two pounds of material in the bowl. Place your material back in the tumbler bowl, then add enough polished ceramic media to bring the load up to the manufacturer's recommended operating level. Give the material and bowl a thorough cleaning before moving on to fine grit. Usually 4-6 days for us with this material. You are done with medium grit when you are satisfied with the shape and smoothness of the stones. After rinsing, add fresh grit and water and start tumbling again. If the mud gets too thick you will need to do a complete rinse of the material and bowl. If the action has slowed, add water a little at a time until the action is back to normal. While the tumbler is running, slowly add water until the material has a thin coat of wet grit and the tumbling action is smooth and fast in the bowl.Ĭheck the bowl every 8-12 hours to ensure the action is still good. If you would like to try burnishing to see if it improves the look of your polished stones full burnishing instructions can be found here.Ĭoarse grit is not used in a vibrating rock tumbler.Ĭeramic media is not required, however, we always run at least 20% ceramic media in a vibratory tumbler because we believe that it improves the tumbling action and results in nicer tumbled stones.Īfter you have your bowl loaded to the manufacturer's recommended level add 1 tablespoon of grit for every two pounds of material, including the media, in the bowl. However, burnishing this material after the polish step can often improve the shininess of the finished stones. Jasper, agate and petrified wood usually take a great polish. Add enough water to almost cover the rocks and let it tumble for one week. Place the rough in the barrel with two tablespoons of TXP polish for each pound of material in the barrel. Any grit carried over from a previous step will likely ruin your polish. IMPORTANT: Make sure that your barrel and rough have been cleaned thoroughly. The rocks should now be smooth and possibly starting to get a slight luster. Again add water to just a little below the top of the rocks. Fine Grit Step:Īfter clean-up, put the rocks back into the barrel using 2 tablespoons of fine grit per pound of material. Our EASY Rock Tumbling Recipe works well for rough that has a Mohs hardness of 7 and has been crushed to a variety of particle sizes under about 1 1/2 inches.īarrel slurry dumped down the drain will harden like concrete. The size range gives the material a good tumbling action and eliminates the need for ceramic media. This polychrome jasper has been crushed and sized to perform well in small rotary tumblers such as the Thumler's MP-1, A-R1, and A-R2. You can see our polished stones in the photo above, and our tumbling procedure is below. We started polishing about four pounds the day it arrived. We obtained great polishing results using the inexpensive TXP aluminum oxide polish. We ran straight rough without using any ceramic media. It has a range of particle sizes in small pieces from approximately 3/8" (9 mm) to 1 1/2" (38 mm) and should require little to no preparation. This mix was crushed and sized to work great for the beginner. Similar material from other locations are also called "polychrome". This polychrome jasper was mined in Madagascar. It takes a great polish and rounds well in a rotary tumbler. It is mostly reds and pinks, mixed with brown, orange, white, gray and a few tinges of other colors. They call this material "polychrome" because it is a rock with many colors. The University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute forecasts that auroral activity will be. The Space Weather Prediction Center's forecast Wednesday showed potential for people in the northern part of the country to possibly see the auroras on the horizon. "The collisions produce light much like how electrons flowing through gas in a neon light collide with neon and other gases to produce different colored light bulbs." "Aurora is the name given to the glow or light produced when electrons from space flow down Earth’s magnetic field and collide with atoms and molecules of the upper atmosphere in a ring or oval centered on the magnetic pole of Earth," the website says. The natural phenomenon is usually caused by solar winds coming from the sun and Earth's magnetic field, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center. The forecast is a change from the number of states that were predicted to possibly see the lights last week. The Alaska Time Zone observes standard time by subtracting nine hours from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC09:00).
